I think I’m still excited to have finished the 2012 Virgin London Marathon on 22 April. The effort involved in my training and on the race itself was enormous but paid off in more than one sense. Not only did I manage to cross the finish line despite a sprain ankle on mile 22 but also, with the help of my family and friends, I’ve raised over £2300 for the Prostate Cancer Research Centre, a figure that surpasses my original goal of £2000. BTW you can still donate if you like!
Previously, I raised £543 for the Prostate Cancer Research Centre by running the Asics British 10K London Run 2011, happily achieving 108% of a £500 goal. Link
My aim is to raise as much money as possible for prostate cancer research, as my husband was stricken with the disease in 2010. After surgery, chemo and radio therapy, he has been told he is now in remission. When this happened to Roberto, we were obviously devastated, as we have two children, aged 13 and 16, but we now have a future that is looking better as time goes by.
I discovered that prostate cancer is one of the most serious forms of cancer in men, as it frequently goes undiagnosed, often until it is too late. The more I have learned, then the more I wish to help in raising money and more importantly, awareness of prostate cancer.
I have been involved in running 5k and 10k races, particularly for breast cancer, for many years, and this was also brought home to me as I myself had a scare approximately 3 years ago with a lump in my breast, luckily benign.
I sincerely wait in great anticipation of I hope a positive outcome to this personal effort, which I look forward to continuing in the next months and years. So far, so good!
